What does furniture flipping mean?

In the simplest terms, flipping furniture means to buy something for a low price, fixing it up, and then selling it at a higher one.

It isn’t as complicated as you might think – in fact, here are some quick steps on how to start:

1. Find a piece of furniture that needs a makeover.

2. Do whatever you need to do to make the piece look nicer like sanding it down, painting it, or replacing a few pieces.

3. Take a bunch of nice photos and list the item for sale online at a higher price than what you bought the furniture for.

4. Wait for someone to buy it!

5. Once you get your money, ship the furniture to a new home or have the buyer pick it up.

This is how you flip furniture!

How profitable is furniture flipping?

That really depends on the piece of furniture and how much time you put into it.

For example, re-imagining an old coffee table may only take a couple hours with some sandpaper and paint, but a solid wood dresser can take days.

And the final price tag for each piece will be different too – you could charge $100 for that coffee table or $500+ for the dresser!

Again, it all depends on your skills and how much work it takes to transform the furniture into something nice again.

How much money do I need to start flipping furniture?

Like with any business, this is a question that you must answer for yourself.

For example, it costs next to nothing (maybe $5) to buy some sandpaper and around $15-$50 for paint to make an old coffee table look new again.

And you could get the coffee table from a thrift store for even less!

But if you have to purchase a new piece of furniture for this project, then it obviously will cost more.

Another thing to consider is how much your time is worth.

If you’re going to take a few hours of your day to sand down and paint that coffee table, it’s probably best not to sell it for less than $30-$40.

But if you use a more expensive piece of furniture as your starting point, then you can charge a higher price.

What materials do you need to get started?

Now that you know how much money you need to start furniture flipping.

It is time to learn what kind of materials you need so you can get started!

Here are all the essentials:

Computer with internet access

A computer gives you direct access to an audience of customers all over the world, which makes it the most important tool you can have.

Having a computer will also allow you to find the best and most affordable furniture to flip!

Storage space

Having storage space to store furniture pieces close by is key because it allows you to ship items faster and more efficiently.

Plus it will avoid clutter in your own home so it doesn’t get in the way of your personal space.

You’ll need a variety of tools to be able to transform furniture pieces.

This will include screwdrivers, hammers, clamps, sanding paper, wrenches and more.

Furniture glides

For some larger pieces like dressers and chests, you may want to invest in furniture glides.

These are essentially plastic pieces that cushion the bottom of a piece of furniture and make it easier to move across floors.

Paint or stain

You may want to repaint certain pieces before selling them for aesthetic purposes.

This will cover up any damage and give you more leverage when pricing your furniture piece.

Putting all of these materials together will give you everything you need to start transforming furniture pieces!

Is furniture flipping for you?

Before you spend any money buying new materials or tools, there are some things that you need to think about first.

Are you willing to put in the time and effort it takes to make furniture look nice again?

This is a labor-intensive job because it’s not always easy to sand down or refinish furniture without any mistakes.

It’s also something you won’t be able to do in one sitting.

It may take several days, depending on the piece of furniture, which can get very frustrating after a while.

If you think you have what it takes to follow through with this business idea and aren’t afraid of doing a little bit of hard work, then you should definitely start!

Who is this business idea for?

Anyone and everyone could be successful at flipping furniture.

However, this particular business idea works best if you really enjoy making things look nice again and don’t mind getting your hands dirty.

It also works if you love to shop for deals – whether it’s hitting up garage sales or buying furniture online.

And one of the best things about this business idea is that it can last as long as you want.

Because as soon as your pieces start selling and you have a little bit of profit coming in, you can reinvest those earnings to buy more materials or tools.

The possibilities are endless!

But remember, your business won’t be successful if you don’t enjoy what you do.

So take some time to think about whether furniture flipping is right for you before making the final decision.

How to Start Furniture Flipping

Now that you know what this business idea is all about, where to find deals on used furniture, and who might be best suited for this type of work.

It’s time to think about how you can get started with flipping furniture and selling it online!

What types of furniture should I flip?

Before you start this business, you’ll need to ask yourself what types of furniture pieces you want to sell.

This can be anything from an old bench for the kitchen or a coffee table.

All the way up to bigger items like dining tables and dressers.

Typically larger furniture tend to sell well so you can get more money for them, but that doesn’t mean you should turn your nose up at smaller items either!

Whatever furniture you choose to work with will depend on what you want to do with the finished product.

Here is a list of the best selling furniture you can sell:

Large dressers

Large dressers are great because they are something people can put in their bedrooms to store clothing.

When you are looking for dressers make sure that they have deep drawers so that it can fit more clothing.

Matching night stands

Another popular furniture to flip are matching side tables or nightstands.

While these are less bulky than a dresser, they tend to bring in money because people love adding matching furniture to their homes.

Especially if it’s something out of the ordinary like a set of end tables with storage drawers on them.

Kitchen tables

Kitchen tables sell like hot cakes because they are an easy piece of furniture to use as a centerpiece for the room.

Whether they want one that fits in a little nook or have room for six people, its always needed in the room.

Side boards

These can be a great source of revenue because they are versatile yet easy to store, making them excellent for someone just starting out.

You can place side boards in both the kitchen and dining room, which is why people love buying them!

Coffee tables

Lastly, coffee tables are perfect because you can sell them during different seasons.

When the colder seasons come around, people are in need for things to keep their feet warm..

But when it’s summer time, you can sell them as a makeshift table for chilling outside with friends.

Where to find furniture to flip?

Once you know what type of furniture to focus on, it’s time to think about where you can find the best deals for furniture flipping.

There are many different places you can look to find potential pieces that will be perfect for flipping.

Here are a few of the most popular places to find furniture to flip:

Garage sales

Garage sales are one of the best ways to score big on furniture at low prices.

Just make sure it’s in good shape and can be easily fixed.

Craigslist is another great place to look for furniture to flip.

Just be careful because you never know if something might have bed bugs or other nasty things so it’s best to do research before buying anything!

Thrift stores

Thrift stores are often the best places to find unique pieces that will sell well.

Just check the condition of the piece before you buy it so you don’t get stuck with furniture that can’t be fixed!

Facebook Marketplace

Of course, Facebook Marketplace is another great place to look for pieces.

Just be aware of the fact that Facebook Marketplace is much more saturated.

But it will have more options for people to choose from so it’s definitely worth checking out.

Friends and family

Lastly, ask friends and family if they have any old furniture pieces they aren’t using.

People are more likely to give away free items if they no longer need them.

How to buy furniture for flipping?

Now that you know where you can find potential pieces, it’s time to learn how to pick them out from the crowd.

Here are a few tip ands tricks you should follow to make sure the piece is worth buying:

Look for solid wood.

Solid wood furniture tends to be the most durable and long lasting, which means you will get more bang for your buck in the end!

So always ask to see the underneath of the furniture piece if it is wood and feel the material.

If it’s particle board, don’t waste your time because the piece won’t last long and won’t sell well.

Look closely at details like joints and hardware

Make sure that the joints are sturdy and the hardware is in good shape.

Hardware can be easily replaced if it’s old or rusty but you might not get a second chance with joints.

Check for signs of damage

If there are any visible damages or stains, make sure to check if it is salvageable or if you can flip it into something else.

But if not, don’t bother because the piece will be hard to fix and won’t sell.

Do your research

This is the best way to find out how much it’s worth.

Many different websites like eBay will allow you to search for pieces based on size, color and condition.

And you can see if they are actually selling and for how much.

What kind of price should you pay for furniture flipping?

Now that we’ve covered how to find furniture and make sure it’s worth flipping.

It is time to go over the all-important factor of deciding how much you want to sell your items for.

Find comparable pieces on sites like eBay and Craigslist

If the furniture you find is comparable to pieces that are listed online, you can use those prices as a starting point.

For example: If your table looks similar to another one on eBay that is priced $150 than you should price yours at around $150 as well or slightly lower.

Price according to demand

There’s a certain level of demand for any popular piece of furniture.

Just make sure to stay within that demand curve or you might end up with an item that isn’t worth much.

Or you may price it incorrectly and loose out on a sale.

When selling furniture online, it is important to remember that you are not just competing with other pieces of furniture.

There are many different options for people looking to buy — retail stores, discount retailers and thrift stores.

That means pricing your piece right is essential to getting the most out of your sales.

How do I find customers?

After all the hard work it takes to make a piece of furniture look new again, it is time to find the right websites to sell your items.

Here are a few sites where you can sell your refurbished furniture:

It’s a great place to start if you are looking for local buyers or in the market for furniture yourself.

How to Restore Old Furniture

Furniture restoration is an art and requires a great deal of hard work to make it look good.

Restoring Wooden Furniture

When it comes to restoring wooden furniture, you need to make sure that there is no excessive damage.

If the wood has scratches or any other signs of damage, you can choose to refurnish it with new materials or refinish it.

You should take off the old finish completely (if needed) and apply a good-quality varnish so that it lasts longer.

Restoring Metal Furniture

When it comes to restoring metal furniture, you should start by sanding off all the rust and repairing any damages.

All surfaces need to be smooth so that the paint will stick better.

Reupholstering Furniture

Reupholstering furniture is probably the most affordable way to make an old piece look new again.

The first step is to remove all the padding and fabric from the frame. It’s okay if some pieces are stuck with glue because you can easily pull them off later.

Use your hands to remove any loose parts of fabric and cut the fabric off.

Once you’ve removed all the old materials, use them as a pattern to make new covers for the furniture.

Make sure you buy material that is tightly woven so it won’t tear easily.

When you have everything sewn together, secure the pieces with glue and staple them to the frame.

Follow these steps when restoring furniture and your piece should look good as new in no time!

Give people an incentive to refer your items and share them with their friends!

Offering discounts on each purchase made from a referral is a good way to do this.

You can easily create a code or link that they will be able to use every time they make a purchase which will automatically track the referral.

6. Write a blog and add links to your shop

Having a blog and linking it in your Etsy store is a great way to drive traffic to both places!

Then use this information to help you improve your listings so they convert better!

Keeping track of your feedback also allows you to thank customers who leave positive remarks which can encourage them to shop with you again in the future.

9. Include high quality photos in your listings.

High resolution pictures will help you get more sales because customers can actually “see” what they’re buying and the true size of the item.

This is important for customers who may want to know what kind of material it’s made out of or if it’ll fit them before buying!

10. Find out what kind of products are selling best.

Knowing what sort of items are getting the most views, favorited, and bought will allow you to make more of those types.

This is especially useful if you can’t seem to get sales for certain products even though they’re some of your best work.

Finding out why this might be happening is important so you can better understand your customers.

If you find that the problem is with the product itself, then try improving it by making more or replacing it entirely.

11. Reach out to local boutiques and shops as well as bloggers locally who might be interested in your items.

Your fellow creatives are a great source of advertising for you!

Having a new place to sell your products and share them with more people is also good for increasing exposure and sales!

Having your items pinned on Pinterest is an awesome way to draw more traffic to your shop.

This can help increase sales by allowing customers who might not have seen your store before find it and purchase something they are interested in.

13. Create an email list of all the people you want to contact who have shopped from your store.

Having a list of people you can contact whenever you have new items listed or sales going on is very helpful!

You can use this to tell them about any special deals, discounts, limited edition items, and more.

Then all they have to do is check their email instead of searching through your store for items they might have missed or are brand new.

14. Write articles about your niche on Medium or Reddit

Having articles written about you is a great way to get new customers!

This can also expose you to different people who might not have known about your little corner of the web!

15. Participate in Etsy chat groups!

These are some of the best places to get advice or just ask any questions you have about your niche.

You can also meet new people with similar interests and potentially make friends!

Most of these groups are made up of other shop owners so they’re very supportive and willing to help out when they can.

You might even learn some tips and tricks from them too!

16. Do a collaboration with another Etsy shop owner!

Collaborations are great because you can team up with somebody who you can make new things with and promote both your shops.

These often include giveaways or maybe even a discount code for the other person’s shoppers.

It can help you gain a new audience and get more sales!

Collaborating is also a great excuse to make friends with somebody who you wouldn’t have met otherwise.

17. Do some research on your competition and see what they’re doing to get more sales.

Knowing what other people in the same niche as you are doing will give you new ideas!

It can help you learn more about your customer base and make it easier to target them with relevant items.

And will allow you to learn how to get sales on Etsy from pros.

18. Find out what time of year your shop gets the most activity.

For example, maybe you make a lot of Christmas ornaments in December because they sell better around that time.

If you know when you’re busiest, then you can plan for it accordingly by stocking up on more materials or hiring help if needed.

19. Take advantage of trends!

A great way to learn how to get sales on Etsy is by capitalizing on trends as they’re happening!

Some common ones include popular items for weddings, babies, or even just general gift purchases.

Knowing when these events might happen and planning ahead can be a very useful tool for increasing your sales.

20. Start out with low prices to get more sales early on!

If you’re just starting out, then it’s a good idea to give yourself time to build up your sales.

This might mean that you have to sacrifice some of your earnings during this period.

But it’ll help in the long run by having more customer confidence and a chance for greater success!

21. Think about branching out into different items that are in your niche.

If you only sell clothes, maybe consider branching out to include hats or shoes.

This can help you reach different sections of your customer base and create some variety in your store!

Having a more diverse selection can attract different buyers and have them coming back for more.

22. Create a sale to clear out some excess inventory!

If you have items that aren’t selling as well anymore, then this might be a good time to get rid of them and make room for newer products.

23. Create package deals that save people money!

For example, if you have two items that are normally sold separately, why not sell them together for a discounted price?

This can help your customers save money and might be more appealing to them.

It might even have them coming back for more items in the future!

24. Ask your customers what they want and then try to sell it to them!

This is a great way to get some feedback from an unbiased source.

You can ask them open-ended questions about their preferences or maybe even create a form on your website so they can fill it out more easily.

It can give you insight into what kind of items your customers want and will help you sell more!

Ultimate Guide to Flip Websites: How to Build, Buy, and Sell

Have you ever wanted to make money online?

If you’re like most people, then the answer is probably yes.

In this article I will talk about the two different ways that you can make money when you flip websites.

The first way is building your own site and selling it for a profit.

The second is buying one and making changes or improvements in order to sell it for a higher price than what you paid for.

All these options have their own benefits, but there are also some downsides as well.

I’ll go over all these options so that you can decide which one is best for you!

What does it mean to flip websites?

First things first, what exactly is “flipping”?

Flipping means buying something at one price and selling it at another price for a profit.

So, when you flipping websites, it means buying a website and selling it for a profit.

There are several ways you can flip websites, but I will be focusing on the main two that most people use to make money online.

Which are building and buying, in order to sell your site for money.

How to build a website for flipping

The first way to get started is by building them from scratch.

Since you are starting from the ground up, you need to make sure that your site has potential before you spend any time or effort on it.

This option is ideal for someone who doesn’t have a whole lot of money to invest, but has more time.

Personally I don’t recommend this option for someone who wants fast cash because it does take a lot of time to build, but it can be a very lucrative option if you’re willing to put the time in.

So, how do you actually go about building your own website?

There are several steps you need to take in order to make sure that you’re building the best website possible.

Below are the steps I recommend all new website flippers take in order to build the most successful site possible.

Decide on your niche.

This is very important because it’s basically what your entire site is going to revolve around.

If you’re not sure which niche to choose, think about one that interests you and then try to find a unique angle to take on it.

A common mistake that many people who flip websites is choosing a niche that is either too broad or too narrow.

For example, you don’t want to choose something like “sports” as your niche because there are way too many sub niches within this main one, so it’s way too broad.

On the other side, you don’t want to choose something like “MLB news” as your niche because this is so narrow that it will be hard to get traffic and make sales with such a limited audience.

You can also use Google Trends to help you determine if there’s a high enough search volume in the niche you want to choose.

Setting up the site

Once you have found a winning niche it’s time to set up the website.

You need to make sure you have a beautiful theme and graphics that will attract readers and your potential site buyer.

You also need to have good content on your site that makes sense and is relevant to the niche you are writing about.

The first step to setting up your site is to look through a list of the best website hosts and choose one.

Here are the three that I highly recommend:

I recommend this Bluehost for beginners because it’s easy to navigate and use.

I personally used them when I first started, but moved to Siteground when I needed a faster hosting plan for my growing audience.

Their price are very inexpesive, starting at $2.75 a month making them super affordable for any newbies who don’t have a lot of budget.

And an added bonus is they also include one free domain name for a year when you buy hosting for your site.

So if you are just starting out and want an affordable plan, then this is the perfect hosting plan for you!

This is the current hosting site I am using now and love them.

I recommend getting their “grow big” plan since you can add unlimited websites in your hosting plan.

So if you want to add a few websites, you don’t need to worry and just create new niche sites as much as you want!

They also have great live chat support, and their servers are fast and reliable.

This might be a better option for those who want more technical know how of coding and site building and if you have a website that is currently growing.

This host is the most expensive of the three starting at $22 a month.

But I love WPEngine because they include 24/7 tech support, 10 premium themes with your purchase, daily backups, and so much more!

You won’t have to worry about anything because WPEngine will keep your site safe from hackers and viruses.

They also have great customer service which is helpful for beginners who are new to website building.

This is the perfect host for flippers who are more serious and want to get the best bang for their buck!

Once you choose your site hosting it is time to choose your domain name.

Choose your domain name

Your domain name is the way people will get to your website.

So it’s important to choose a good one that relates to your niche and has potential for great SEO, which we’ll cover later in this article.

I recommend using the same company that you purchased your hosting plan so it’ll be easier to keep track of everything.

Since I use Siteground, I purchased my domain through them for only $18 extra a year!

If you decide to get hosting on Bluehost, they include 1 year of free domain so you are all set.

After you have your hosting set up and domain name pointed to it, now it’s time to pick out a website building platform.

Choosing a website platform

There are many different platforms that you can choose from, but I prefer WordPress because it is easy to use and user friendly for beginners.

Worpress is a way that you can build websites, blogs, and even e-commerce stores using a simple interface.

You don’t need programming skills to use WordPress and it offers a number of free and paid themes with useful features.

Finding the right theme

Once you have found the right hosting company and WordPress platform, now it’s time to find the right theme.

This is one of the most important parts of building your site because it’s what readers will see first.

It is also important to choose a theme that is fast, so that you can give a great user experience.

Here are a few themes that I recommend:

  • Kadence for its easy and customizable templates
  • Astra for their fast, lightweight and customizable themes
  • Genesis Pro for its fast, secure, beautifully designed and SEO optimized themes

Having a fast theme is going to make a huge difference in your traffic because who wants to stay in a website that is slow to load!

Which can mean loosing a lot of readers and traffic.

Customize your site design

Once you have chosen a theme, it is time to customize it so that it fits into your niche.

Here are some things that you’ll want to add:

  • A contact page for people looking to connect with you or learn more about what you do.
  • An about page to get people excited and learn more about you or your business
  • Social media buttons to let people follow you on social sites like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and more.
  • Blog posts to share your knowledge about your topic with your readers.

These are just a few things that you’ll want to add in order to attract your readers and build a community.

Writing the best content for your website

After you have set up your site, it is time to write the best content for your audience.

This is very important because it’s what people will read to see if they want to stay on your site or go elsewhere.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when writing great content:

  • Write blog posts that your ideal readers will want to learn about
  • Write in a conversational tone so it doesn’t come across as spam or boring
  • Include helpful links that your readers will find valuable and want to click on
  • Make sure the title is enticing, but doesn’t sound spammy
  • Link out to authority sites with great content, but don’t overdo it
  • Always keep the reader in mind when writing articles
  • Make sure to create evergreen (content that doesn’t become outdated) content from the start, so it will always be relevant
  • Make sure to write a blog post with each product you sell, this way people can get information and read reviews before buying anything
  • Be consistent in your posting rate (how often you publish blog posts). You’ll want to make sure it’s at least once a week or more if you can.

These are just a few of the things that you’ll want to consider when writing content, but it’s what will truly make your website stand out.

Now that you have chosen a platform, found a theme, and written the best content for your site, it is time to start building traffic.

Getting Traffic to Your Website

Now you have all of the basic pages set up and ready for traffic.

But if nobody can find them, then what’s the point?

Fortunately, there are many different strategies that you can use to get traffic to your website.

Here are some ideas:

Guest Posting – Write for other blogs in your niche and link back to your site.

Email outreach – Reach out to people in your niche and let them know about your new website.

Social media – Post interesting updates and follow others in your niche.

Pinterest – Create an account and pin to boards related to your niche.

SEO – Optimizing for search engine optimization is key to getting your site noticed by Google.

You can use a keyword search tool like which will help you find the most popular keywords in your industry that you can use for SEO on your blog posts.

I personally love Kesearch and have used them for several years to rank #1 on Google for the keywords in my niche.

But I know how confusing SEO can be, especially if you are a beginner, that is why I highly recommend using this SEO Checklist tool to help you learn how to implement SEO to drive traffic to your website.

Their step by step guide is super easy to use and can help you rank on the first page of Google, even you have no idea what you’re doing!

Once you have completed these steps, then it’s time to start looking into the different ways that you can make money with your website.

Making Money with your website

Now it’s time for the fun part, monetizing your website!

Even though there are a ton of ways to make money on your site, I will be sharing three that could work for anyone.

Let’s take a look at each one separately.

1. Affiliate Marketing

The first way to make money from a website is through affiliate marketing.

In short, you review someone else’s product and add their affiliate link to your post.

Each time somebody clicks on that link and makes a purchase, you’ll get a commission for the sale.

But it will only work if you give your readers great content and information, which will gain their trust to buy what you recommend.

So make sure to only review products that you personally would recommend and actually use yourself.

For more information on affiliate marketing, I suggest checking out this guide here.

2. Selling Digital Products

The second way to make money from a website is through selling digital products.

For example, you might create an eBook or templates that teaches people something new or solves a problem that they are currently facing.

This is also a great way to make passive income because you create the product once and then continue to make money from it.

If you’re wondering how to get started with this, then you might want to check out this article.

3. Site Ads

The third way to make money from a website is through advertisements.

Essentially, you host banner ads or text links on your website that points to products and services which will earn you a commission from the advertiser.

In order to make money from site ads, you have to attract a large audience of loyal readers so that you can be accepted in ad agencies like Mediavine.

Most of these agencies have a minimum requirement for the amount of readers you have a month before they accept you, so make sure to check if you are eligible.

Once you know how much money you can make from each of these options, it’s time to come up with a plan for where most of your work and effort will go to.

You might decide that affiliate marketing is going to be your primary source of income, so you need to focus on giving great reviews for products and services that you can recommend.

On the other hand, if it’s going to be advertisements, then you’ll need to put more work into finding a popular niche and building an engaged audience of readers and followers.

By making this decision ahead of time, you’ll know where to take your site and your business.

But, it’s important to be flexible because if something isn’t working, then you need to be willing to change course so that you can still make money with your website.

Doing all of this can take a lot of time and effort to get it just right.

While building websites and flipping them may seem like a lot of work, there is a huge upside to doing it yourself: you keep 100% of your earnings.

If you are interested in learning more about how to build websites, check out our guide on it here: Ultimate Guide to Amateur Blogging.

How to buy then flip websites

The next way you can make money flipping websites is by buying an existing website.

Buying a website rather than building one yourself can be a huge time saver and it still allows you to make money online.

But you might be wondering how it works, so let’s go over the steps you need to take in order to buy a website.

First, find an appealing site that is already making money or has potential to make a lot of money.

It is important that you choose wisely because you are not only purchasing the domain and content, but also all of the future profits.

Next, you want to make sure you fully understand how the site makes money and if it’s a good investment.

You should have an idea of what type of business model they are following so you can use this information later on when optimizing your website for search engines.

Finally, reach out to the owner of the site and try to negotiate a deal.

Make sure that both of you are on the same page when it comes to the selling price so there aren’t any surprises.

Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions and use this information to help you make your decision so that you can buy the site if it’s a good investment.

Once you’ve negotiated the price with the owner, it will be time for the final steps in buying or making an offer on their website.

The way these transactions are typically handled is through, which is a website that holds the money and insures both parties until everything has been transferred over to you.

Since the payment and sale of a website is usually worth thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars, it’s nice to know that there is a 3rd party who will make sure that both parties honor their end of the agreement.

Where to Flip Websites for Money

Now that you know how to buy a website, it’s time to figure out the best places to flip websites for money.

There are many ways to sell a website, but we will go over the most popular options below:

1. Find an interested buyer through your personal network.

This is probably one of the easiest ways to find someone who wants to buy your site.

All you have to do is post on your LinkedIn, Facebook, or other social media accounts letting people know that you are interested in selling your website and what type of site you are looking to sell (make sure to include any traffic numbers).

Chances are someone who knows someone else will be interested in buying the site, which makes it easy to sell.

But if this doesn’t work, don’t worry there are specific sites that can help you.

2. Sell your site on a marketplace.

Here are a few legit online marketplaces that people go to in order to find websites that are for sale:

This is one of the most popular marketplaces to sell and buy websites.

Not only that, Flippa is especially useful because you can get an idea of how much a website is worth and what the average price for a particular site is (based on sales and auctions).

Flippa has thousands of websites listed to buy or sell, so you might find something that is perfect for you.

They provide members with a list of investment opportunities.

These could be businesses that are for sale or profitable money-making websites that you can buy and flip in order to make money online.

They charge the seller a 5% brokers fee, which is a great deal as many other marketplaces charge a much higher fee.

3. Website Broker

A website broker is someone who makes their living buying and selling websites.

This is the best option for you if you are looking for a quick sale, since these people are always on the lookout of good deals to buy.

Just keep in mind that some companies will just want to buy your site for the traffic and content, while others might actually be interested in buying the site because they also want to keep it up and running.

Here are a few legit website brokers:

Empire Flippers

This site, just like Flippa, allows people to list, buy or sell websites in different categories.

They also have their own database of websites that are listed on the site.

All you have to do is create an account and look for websites that you might be interested in.

The Website Flip Brokerage

This brokerage is unique because they sell sites through their email list, so you have to be an email subscriber in order to get the great deals!

Even if you do not know how to build a website from scratch, there are many options for buying one from marketplaces or website brokerages.

Flip Websites: Frequently asked Questions

How much can you make flipping websites?

The amount of money you can make from flipping websites depends on a number of factors, such as the type of website that you are buying or selling and how much work you put into it.

If you find a site for sale that is already making a profit and buy it with hopes to keep the traffic going, there’s no reason why you can’t start making money within the first few weeks if you put in the time and effort.

On the other hand if you are selling your site, according to Forbes, you should aim for 24-36x your monthly revenue.

So if you are making $1,000 a month on your website, you should sell for around $24,000 – $36,000.

Sounds like a lot of money? Not really, because the person who buys your site will have continous income for years to come if they do the work that needs to be done.

If you want to get a better idea of how much websites in your niche are currently selling, here are a few sites where you should look:

  • FE International
  • Empire Flippers
  • Flippa

The biggest thing to remember when it comes to making money flipping websites is to do your research and take action!

How much work do you have to put into it?

This is a common question that a lot of new website flippers might have.

The truth is you have to put in the work, but it really depends on the condition of the site and how much you want to get out of it.

It also depends on the site that you are looking to buy or sell.

Finding a website for sale online is easy, but if it’s too good to be true chances are there will be issues down the road.

However, if you find a website that is in good condition and up and running, it’s likely that the seller has already spent some time on creating content, adding relevant keywords to their site, and setting up social media accounts.

After you buy the website (which means you own 100% of it), you’ll most likely want to continue working with it to improve the site and make it look like something that is worth money.

You’ll also want to put in time in optimizing your content through SEO, and promoting the website by sharing it with others in your niche (to get organic traffic).

Do you have to be tech savvy?

You don’t have to be tech savvy to flip websites, but it certainly helps if you are.

Some new flippers might want to start off slow until they get the hang of everything, which means buying a website that is already built.

However, you can learn how to build your own site through trial and error and ofcourse we also have a ton of tips here.

Keep in mind that starting out with building websites can be very difficult because there are so many different things that you have to think about.

But all the hard work will pay off and could make you a lot of money.

Because whether you build a site or buy one, you should have a good idea of how to run it so it can keep making money for you or the buyer you flip it to.

What types of websites can I flip?

There are many different types of websites that you can flip, which is why it’s important to have a few options in mind before you get started.

You can buy and sell websites in almost every niche, but here are some of the most popular sites that people are flipping right now:

You need to know what you’re interested in and how much profit you might stand to make before you start flipping websites, which is why it’s recommended that your first flip should be something easy.

However, keep in mind that if you want to make more money off of a website it will take more time and effort.

For example, a site that sells for $200 might not make as much as a site that is worth $20,000 because the traffic volume will be low.

So it is just a matter of what you are willing to do and how much budget you have.

Guide to Flip Websites: Key Takeaways

You can make a full time income off of flipping websites, but you need to be willing to put in the work that is required.

Keep in mind that it’s not going to happen overnight and there will be many failures along the way.

It’s also important for new website flippers to learn how to build their own site, but if you aren’t comfortable with that then buying one is an option.

When buying a website it’s important to do your research and make sure there are no issues.

You can learn how to identify problems by researching reviews, talking to the seller, and asking questions in forums.

It might take some time but you’ll improve with experience and then you can start making larger flips that will lead to more profits.

But like any business, there is always risk…

Now that you know more about the different options that are available for website flippers, it’s time to get started with building your own business!

The sooner you start making money off of these sites the higher ROI you will have for each one!

So what are you waiting for?

Go out there and start making money flipping websites!

Cons of Selling on ThredUp

While selling online does have many benefits, there are some drawbacks as well.

Here are a few reasons why people don’t like selling on ThredUp:

Your items may not be accepted if they don’t meet a certain condition.

Unlike other platforms like eBay, or Facebook Marketplace, you cannot list all your items for sale.

They have their own rules that must be followed during the selling process.

You have to ship your items using their free clean-out service which can take a little bit of time and effort.

Before you start selling on ThredUp, make sure to read their requirements carefully in order to avoid any problems or mistakes.

I have listed them below, so make sure you follow them before sending your clothes.

The process may take longer than expected depending on how many items you have to sell.

Not a great platform to sell designer clothing.

Although you can sell trendy items on the site, they do not cater to high-end brand buyers.

That is why if you have a lot of designer items, you may want to try other platforms like Depop or The RealReal.

Not only do they cater to buyers who love brands but they can also help authenticate and price your items accurately.

That way you can be sure that your items will sell at a higher price and you won’t have to worry if they’re real or not.

Steps to Selling on ThredUp

Now that you know what ThredUp is all about, let’s get into the nitty-gritty of how to sell clothes online.

Here are the steps you will need to follow in order to successfully sell your item(s) on ThredUp.

1.) Fill up your cleanout kit

Using their clean-out service means that you will be given a kit by ThredUp where you can fill it with gently used items that you do not need or use.

2.) Mail your kit

Once you have filled up your kit, just place it in the mail using the prepaid shipping label.

3.) ThredUp takes care of the rest

Once ThredUp receives your items and approves them, everything will be worry-free since they take care of the rest!

Upfront Vs. Consignment Item Payout

When you are selling clothes on ThredUp, you will be given two options for payouts for your items, upfront or consignment.

Upfront Item

Upfront item means that the clothing you sent is in great condition, on-trend, and in season.

If they consider your clothing upfront, you will be given a payout right away and you don’t need to wait for it to sell on the site to get paid.

You can expect to get paid 5% to 80% of the anticipated selling price on ThredUp.

Consignment Item

If your clothing is considered a consignment item, it means that even though it is in good condition, it may not sell right away.

You will only be paid once your item has sold on the site, and it will be based on the selling price.

Once they sell your items for you, you can expect to get paid 5% to 80% of the sale value.

The items can be up for consignment for up to 84 days, but after 7 days you can reclaim the item if you do not like the way ThredUp attempts to sell your clothes.

Below is also ThredUp’s payouts table that will allow you to see how you will get paid for your items.

ThredUp clothing quality standards

Before you start selling clothing online, there are a few things you should know.

ThredUp has specific quality standards so make sure that your items fall within their guidelines before you send them your clothes!

In order to pass their inspection, all clothing must be:

  • In good condition and wearable. This means no fading, shrinkage, and pilling.
  • The clothing must also be damage-free without stains, rips, and odors.
  • They must not be altered, this includes missing sizing information.

So before you send out your clothes, make sure they are clean, in good condition, and free of any damage or alterations.

Otherwise, ThredUp will decline and return the items for you.

How to source clothes to sell on ThredUp

Sourcing clothes is the first step towards selling online!

While it may seem like a daunting task at first, I promise sourcing clothing only gets easier once you get the hang of it.

Give yourself a good amount of time to do some research and come up with a plan.

I recommend spending a few hours going through your closet and sorting out the clothes that you’d like to sell into two piles – keep and sell.

If you’re having a hard time deciding which items to sell, try asking yourself these three questions:

Does this still fit me? If the answer is yes, then it may be worth keeping.

Have I worn it in the last year or two? If not, then you can probably sell it!

But keep in mind that brand new items should only be sold if they are unopened.

Do I love it? If the answer is no, then you should probably get rid of it.

Be honest with yourself and you’ll have a much easier time going through your closet!

Once you’ve completed that step, go through every piece of clothing and make sure it meets ThredUp’s quality standards.

If it doesn’t, then you can try selling it on eBay, or Poshmark since they are less strict.

After you go through your own closet, you can also look for clothes on other platforms if you want to sell more items online.

Here are a few places where you can source clothing to sell:

Thrift stores

Designer clothing resale shops

Fashion swap groups on Facebook

Online classifieds like Craigslist

Keep in mind that you won’t need to source everything at once.

After a few weeks of searching, you should have enough items to send in your first box!

Just make sure you’ve done the research and know what ThredUp will accept before sending anything.

Tips for Successful Selling

Now that you have all the information needed to sell on ThredUp, it’s time to learn some tips and tricks about selling clothes online.

These are the things I’ve learned as well as talking to other people who’ve sold on the site.

Having Multiple Items – While it’s definitely possible to try and sell clothes online on your own, I’ve found that selling in bulk makes it so much easier!

Not only will you make more money with everything combined but you’ll also be able to get your items out faster!

I recommend picking a handful of items you’d like to sell and sending them all at once in their cleanout kit.

Picking the Right Items – When you think about selling clothes on ThredUp, you have to make sure that you are choosing the right items that people will actually want to buy.

You’ll want to focus on selling items that are in good condition, fit most people, and can be worn in several different ways.

Overall, selling clothes on ThredUp is a fairly easy and fast process!
