You don’t need a degree to land an online job. But you do need a strong portfolio to get noticed.

Hey everyone, welcome to another episode of my offbeat journey, where I share with you the ups and downs of being a remote worker and today, we’re going to talk about how to get an online job without a degree, especially if you are trying to transition to a different type of work.

If you’re not really experienced with remote kinds of jobs and these are some of the things that I definitely highly recommend you do. I’ve tried a few of them and I’ve known people have gotten jobs from doing these types of things as well. So let’s dive right into it.

The first one that I would recommend is to get an online certificate with places like reputable places like Google.

So Google right now has these career certificates that you can do and they take around three to six months to complete. So some of the things that they offer is for people who are interested in cyber security data analytics, digital marketing and e-commerce, IT support, project management and UX design.

So obviously, these are more tech based, it’s because we are in an era where everything is definitely online right now and these are the types of jobs that are in demand.

So, if you want in demand tech jobs, these are some of the things that you can do, some of the career certificates that you can get.

If you are interested in coding, there’s also boot camps that you can take as well. They take around the same time, 3 to 6 months – sometimes longer, especially if you’re opting to do part-time, so you can definitely look into different types of those types of coding boot camps as well.

Obviously there’s more certificates than this that you can get. That’s not the ones that I share with you that even Google doesn’t offer, so just do a little bit of research depending on what it is that you’re interested in, get those certifications and it’s going to give you an edge to get the job that you want.

The next thing that I would definitely recommend you doing which goes hand-in-hand with getting a career certificate is to create a portfolio of your body of work so this can be for people who want to be writers, photographers, coders and more.

So for myself, I did not go to school. I didn’t get a degree as an like – a degree in English or journalism or anything like that. Now, the reason how I got into writing and now I got a full-time writing position is because I started a blog. I created it. I ran it for several years. I had a portfolio of body of my work, of what I had written for several years and that’s what allowed the company to trust me to create content for their website and for their clients as well. And I also was a freelance writer for a year or two and that’s how I got a full-time position, so I definitely highly recommend this.

Now if you’re a photographer you can create an online portfolio, for coders, they also have something similar that they can do again. Just include all of your body of work, create an online portfolio and if it is good enough, you will stand out from the crowd, especially if you know how to get the work done, right? Because at the end of the day, they’re really just looking for people who can get the work done, who can get it done well and who fits, and who is in line with what they are trying to do with their company as well.

Now, the third thing that would that I would recommend is to put your work up on Upwork and Fivver, or put your services up on Upwork, Fiverr or other sites like that that allows you to share with other people what kind of services you would like to do or would be able to do do.
You can apply for jobs there. You can also offer your services.

Now, I do recommend that if you are just starting out it’s best to offer a lower price for services. Now, this is for you to be able to build up your portfolio of work and I would definitely recommend this to people who don’t have much yet, right? And this is a way for you to gain that experience and then later on, you can start charging more.

And you can also create more projects that are for your portfolio and for your resume, as examples of what you can do, what you’re capable of and I know some people will be like, “Well you don’t want to offer services, that’s too low of a price because you don’t want to undervalue yourself.”, yes, I would definitely say that’s true, only if you’re already experienced, you also don’t want to jump the gun and be like, “Hey I, you know, I’m worth this.”, but you don’t even know what to do yet. You don’t have a lot of experience and that’s not good as well.

You don’t want to – make sure that you want to make sure that you’re not stating that you can do X, Y and Z, but you’ve never done that before because that’s not fair for the companies that you’re working for and that’s also going to get you overwhelmed if you do get a job that you are not, you know, capable of doing the work. So you want to make sure that you’re giving yourself a lot of, you know, examples for your portfolio and this is a good way for you to do that.

So once you have all of this, now whether it is a certificate, creating your portfolio, offering your services on online sites, like Upwork and Fivver. As long as you’re consistent, you work at it, you work hard every single day, you’re going to get something.

Now in the beginning, you may just start out as a freelancer. You may just be a contractor and you’re to build that up and eventually become a full-time worker, if that is what you are planning on doing.

Now, if it’s not, you can keep being a contractor, a freelancer, there’s nothing wrong with that. You can definitely make a lot more money as well, because there’s no cap on what you can make.

So those are really great things about being a freelancer or a contractor because you can work with as many clients as you want. There’s no cap to it, but obviously, so you want to make sure that you can get the job done as well. You don’t want to just keep taking and clients and not being able to fulfill the work that they need to get done.

So that’s it. Those are the three things that I would highly recommend for you to look into if you want to get an online job without a degree, what you can do, especially if you are transitioning to a different type of work that you have no experience in and the last thing I would say is to talk to everyone in your network.

You never know, who knows, they may know somebody who can help you out. Give you a little bit of advice. I know there’s a lot of things online on YouTube that can give you some tips and tricks, but it never hurts to speak with someone one-on-one as well.

Obviously, you want to respect their time but it’s always best to see if there’s anybody in your network that can help you go through the process as well.
