Depop is a very convenient online store to use both for the purchaser and the seller.
Setting up your Depop Account
To start selling on Depop, you’re going to have to first create an account!
The account creation process is a fairly simple 4 step process.
First, you’ll want to visit Depop’s sign-up page and input your phone number to receive a code.
After you’ve input your phone number you’ll be sent a 6 digit code that you need to enter to continue this process.
Once you’ve done that, you’ll be brought to a screen where you can input your email, username, and password of choice.
Once you’ve done all of that, you’ll be shown their terms of service and the option to fully create your account!
Congrats, you’ve now created an account and are ready to get started learning how to sell on Depop!
Connecting your Paypal
With your account created, you’ll want to get paid for any items you sell.
Depop currently lacks its own payment system, meaning all purchases are done through Paypal.
So before you sell, you’re going to need to link your Paypal account.
To connect your Paypal account, you’ll first need to go to your Depop profile.
Once there you’ll be able to select your settings.
From the settings menu, you’ll find the option for a Paypal account.
Once you’ve selected the option on that menu, you’ll be prompted to connect your Paypal account.
From there, you’ll just need to log in to your Paypal account and you’ll be done with this setup process within a few minutes.
You may need some extra verification steps on Paypal’s end, but once those are done, you should be good to get started!
Depop fees
Before you can start selling on this app, you should familiarize yourself with the fees that Depop charges to its sellers per item.
The first of these Depop fees are 10% of your total sale, which includes the shipping costs.
This fee won’t be deducted from the sale itself, but rather your Paypal account, so don’t panic when you see that charge!
Paypal will also charge you a fee for the transaction which depends on where you are.
You can learn about those fees from their website.

Depop’s Refund Policy
Refunding is something that anyone wanting to learn how to sell on Depop should know about.
Before giving the refund, you’ll be given 2 options of whether to allow or decline the process.
Allowing a refund will mean that you’ll need to go through Paypal to get it done.
Paypal’s refund process isn’t too hard to work with and even allows for partial refunds, although with a transaction made with your Depop store, any refund will likely be expected in full.
Refusing to refund will mean that the buyer will have to open a dispute against you to try and get it.
If they have a valid reason, you will still be expected to give a full refund.
If the reason for the refund is invalid then you’ll be in the clear.
Setting up your account
The next step of learning how to sell on Depop is understanding how to set up your account.
There are 2 main places where you can do this, which is their app or website.
Here are the exact steps to follow to create your account on their app:
- You’ll want to open up the app and select the camera icon, from there you’ll be able to select the option to “set up your shop.”
- Once you’ve done that, you’ll be prompted to share a logo or picture that represents what your brand is.
- After your logo has been selected, you’ll then need to write a bio for your shop and what it’s about and what you will be selling.
- Next, you’ll be prompted to connect your social media to your shop before you can continue.
- Then you will be asked to fill in your name and billing address, which will complete the process and allow you to start listing your items.
The process for the website should be similar and you can easily follow their steps to create and start listing right away.

How to start listing your items on Depop
Now that your shop account is done you’re ready to create your first listing.
- The option to create your first listing should appear once you’ve created your shop.
- Like with the setup process, you’ll need to select the camera icon to continue.
- You’ll have to now take 4 photos of the item you’re planning on selling. (Taking a video is optional, but we’d highly recommend that to improve your chances of getting a sale!)
- You will also have to add a description, your location, a fitting category, some hashtags, and of course the price of the item.
- Once all of that is done, you’ll finally be able to post your listing on Depop!
Now you know how to sell on Depop’s mobile app!
Making your listing on the Depop Website.
The process for creating a listing on Depop’s website takes about as much time as creating a listing on their app.
- To get started, log into the Depop website.
- Once you’re logged in, select the “Sell” button on the top right of the page.
- Finally, to list your item with Depop you’ll need 4 photos, a description, your location, a category for the item, hashtags, and the price.
Whether you want to create that listing on their app or their website, it is easy to do and will only take a few minutes.
Tips for selling on Depop
Now that you’ve created your first listing and officially opened up your Depop shop, you’re ready to start churning out sales!
We have a list of tips below that are used by the best Depop sellers to create more income on the app.
Use tags on your description
When uploading an item for sale, you have the option of adding tags to describe the product so that it shows up more on search results.
However, please do not include things like “AS IS” or words/phrases in all caps since this is considered yelling on Depop.
Also, tags such as “like,” “similar,” and “best offer” are not allowed.
Add high-quality photos
The main photo of the product is very important, so please use a picture that shows off the best sides of the items that you are listing.
You can add more pictures from different angles or even add more pictures to show details such as buttons, frills, etc.
And always make sure they are all high-quality photos!
Detailed Description
Next, you need to add information about your item in the appropriate section.
Describe your item in a way that will make it stand out among all the other items on Depop.
For example, if you’re selling a handbag, you can write something like “I made this purse from an old dress and two plastic bags!”
This phrase is guaranteed to attract attention!

Price your items competitively
Make sure you price your items competitively.
If it’s too high, people won’t buy it even if the item is cute or of great quality!
Not only that but if you are selling on multiple platforms such as eBay and Depop, please think about how much each platform will charge you in fees.
For example, eBay charges a 10% final value fee and takes out PayPal fees for both the seller and the buyer whereas Depop only charges a 20% selling fee.
So if you were going to sell an item for $50 on eBay, please sell it for less than that on Depop so that you don’t have to pay eBay’s fees.
Use keywords
It’s important to use words that potential buyers might search when looking for an item like yours.
Some words that might be useful are “brand,” “vintage,” “condition,” “size,” etc.
This will increase the chances of your item being found by more potential buyers!
Be creative with your item title
Your item title should be creative and original to stand out from the other items on Depop.
Use it as a chance to explain the item more!
Give as much information as possible about your product and how it was used and kept if you can.
If possible, use words that allow the buyer to imagine what the item might look or feel like.
For example, instead of writing “I am selling this bag,” you should write something more along the lines of “This vintage bag is soft and perfect for carrying around during the day!”
Post on Depop often!
Depop is a place where you can share your products with many people, so please list as much as possible.
Sellers who post items frequently are seen more by potential buyers which allows them to gain more followers and a larger fan base.
Posting items also gets you more exposure on the Explore page!
After your item is sold
Once the transaction has been completed, you should receive a notification telling you that your item was sold.
It might take 2-3 days for Depop to release this money into your account.
Depop will send you an email saying that they have transferred the money into your PayPal account.
You can also check the transaction on the Depop website by clicking on your active listings.

Shipping your items
Depop recommends using standard shipping since they take care of the postage.
Sellers are responsible for listing the postage cost in their item description.
If you use standard shipping, it is recommended that sellers ship within 1 week after receiving payment.
Standard shipping is free for buyers if they are located in the U.S.
If you would like to use express shipping or priority mail, please make sure that your buyer is willing to pay for this extra fee.
Please note that items may take longer to arrive since sellers are responsible for the postage costs of their items.
For more information about shipping internationally, check out Depop’s Shipping and Return Policy page.
