5 ways to successfully prepare for the laptop lifestyle.
I can’t believe that the time has arrived and I am finally diving into the laptop lifestyle full time!
There are so many doubts and fears running through my head every day. But as I have officially begun, all the anxieties have lessened and truthfully, I have been a bit numb.
I am sure it will all come back when I have settled in!
It’s been tough keeping my self sane during these last few months and here are 5 ways that I have prepared and kept myself sane for the laptop lifestyle.
- Learn how failing helped me succeed as a freelancer.

Surround yourself with the right support system
When you are preparing to become a freelancer, you may not anticipate how lonely and isolated you will feel when you are no longer surrounded by co-workers and people you can bounce off ideas from.
One of the ways I have been able to keep sane throughout this journey is finding the right support system and creating friendships with people who are in the industry.
I can never stress enough how it is crucial to have these relationships, especially when you are in the thick of it and are ready to give up.
Create multiple streams of income.
One of the best advice I ever received was to make a steady stream of income for my essentials. Once the essentials are taken care of I can be free to play around with how I am making income.
This way, I am not desperate and can still stay creative.
I have come to realize that in order to succeed in this laptop lifestyle, I have to create income from the skills I already had.
So, before I even left my 9-5, I was already looking for multiple ways to take advantage of the skills I have acquired. Whether through my podcast, blog, social media, teaching English online or being a freelance writer.
Want to learn how I earned over 11K in a month with brand sponsorships? I’ve done it with the help of Jacob Fu and Esther Julee’s e-course “No bullshit guide to working with brands”, Jacob and Esther make over 25K a month through sponsorships alone. Through their e-course I learned negotiating techniques that allowed me to triple my rates as a content creator. This e-course has been instrumental in my success in making revenue from my podcast and website. My income did not take off until I learned the negotiation techniques that Jacob shares in this e-course.
Pay off as much debt as you can.
One of the biggest reasons why I was confident in leaving my 9-5 is because I have paid off all of my debt. Which makes it easier for me to rest easy knowing that I do not have the added stress of creating income to sustain my living, make a profit from my business and also pay off debts.
I know this may not be realistic for many people, but pay off as much as you can before you dive into this laptop lifestyle.
Save, Save, Save.
This may seem like a no-brainer, but it can also be the hardest things to do.
Make sure you have a nest egg to fall back on in case you fall on hard times because being a freelancer and entrepreneur your income will be unsteady.
There will be weeks and sometimes months where the money will be extremely low.
Living a laptop lifestyle in New York city is even harder because of the cost of living. A lot of you who are thinking of going into this lifestyle can definitely go around this predicament by living in low-cost cities like South America or South East Asia.
But for those of us, who choose to live in bigger cities, here are a few ways I have learned to save.
Find an apartment that is not in the heart of the city.
If you are willing to commute a bit longer to the hot spots, you will be able to save on your apartment.
Don’t eat out or order in.
This may be a sacrifice for many of you, but eating out even a few times a week can add up.
Instead, buy a slow cooker and meal prep for the week. Not only will you be able to eat healthier but save a ton!
Know your budget and stick to it.
Track what you are spending and learn what you need your monthly budget to be.
This way you can be more aware of when you need to slow or stop your spending.
I have used the app Mint- which has been extremely helpful since it tracks my spending and shows me when I am overspending.
Be mentally and professionally prepared.
The one thing that a lot of people don’t tell you is the mental preparation you need in order to succeed in this laptop lifestyle.
You can have the savings and the right support but if you are not mentally prepared, you will struggle.
There will be so many times where you will get distracted, feel depressed, and face a huge setback that will make you unmotivated.
Having the right mindset and mental preparation will keep you going even through the tough times.
The way I have been able to prepare myself for these situations is by asking:
Is having a freedom lifestyle more important than a steady income?
Will I be OK with unstable income and to fail continuously before I succeed?
Am I willing to work my ass off so I can succeed?
If you answered yes to all of these questions, then you may have a good chance of succeeding!
